A Resume That Stands Out!

by HB Consult on August 11, 2010

Each time you apply for a job , you have to think of your resume as the product you are striving to sell . As a product, the resume have to be “sale-able” . It needs to be attractive to the eyes. It needs to be catchy . It should be tantalizing to the purchaser .

Before you ever start to write your resume, consider that a resume’s aim is not just to attract and win the approval of a possible hiring manager. First and foremost , it has to outshine everyone else’s.

Below are some foolproof tips that can help you stick out from among the other job candidates .

  1. Most importantly ; be truthful. Your honesty in creating this personal record is highly important. Avoid lies, half-truths, and exaggerations.
  2.   Give close attention to the physical appearance of your document. Present your resume in a lay-out that is tidy , professional, and eye-catching . Use clear, easy-to-read fonts, and avoid overuse of italics, underscores, and bold lettering. Print on good quality paper, with matching cover letters and envelopes. Use legal-sized paper (8.5” x 11”) and preferably white in color. The excellence of work in your presentation will likely be a defining strong determinant in a hiring manager’s selection of interview qualifiers .
  3. Measure numerically your specific achievements . The hirer’s eye is quickly caught by numbers and quantities . When presenting your achievements; be specific and clear . This one is a good example , “Initiated and spearheaded a sales promo which went on for 3 months and produced proceeds of $ 120,000.”
  4. To make stronger effect , you can place on top of your resume cover letter your employment objective . For instance , “Highly skilled , determined professional looks for a position as administrative assistant in pharmacologic sales.” Your cover letter must denote an exact job title in reference to your job application. People often make the mistake of keeping their resumes general thinking that this improves their chances to be hired. More often than not , the reverse happens. It is usual for hiring managers to come across so many resumes that they lose interest in figuring out where to assign someone , so they do the easier work instead – trashing out such resumes into the rejection pile .
  5. Endorse your best attributes using assertive , proactive language. Present them optimistically . Show how these qualities empowered you and the organization to reach good results through compelling , expressive words.
  6. In formulating your resume format, it is smart to look for assistance and get helpful tips from resume compilations found in book stores, libraries, and the internet. Just be careful with nonspecific templates . Bear in mind that your resume is a personal endorsement that should differentiate your distinctive qualifications from competing job candidates .

It is when these criteria are achieved that the job-seeker will most likely show up , obtain an interview, and eventually , get the job.
